Introduction
The CITB SMSTS is a nationally recognised 5-day course designed for individuals working in a management role within the construction industry.
Throughout the course, participants will learn how to effectively manage health and safety on site, conduct risk assessments, implement safe systems of work, and ensure legal compliance. Key topics include risk management, CDM Regulations, site set-up, occupational health, working at height, fire safety, environmental management, and accident prevention.
Who Should Attend?
The SMSTS course is ideal for individuals who are responsible for managing construction sites and ensuring health and safety compliance. It is specifically designed for site managers, project managers, contracts managers, site agents, and construction directors who have overall responsibility for planning, organising, monitoring, and controlling construction activities.
Participants should already have some experience in the construction industry and a basic understanding of site operations.
Certification and Career Benefits
The SMSTS certificate must be renewed every five years to remain valid. The refresher course ensures continued compliance and demonstrates ongoing competence in site safety management.
If certification expires, delegates may be required to complete the full SMSTS course again rather than the refresher.
Assessment
The assessment consists of a combination of multiple-choice questions and practical scenario-based tasks, allowing candidates to demonstrate their knowledge of legislation, risk management, and effective site safety management.
Delegates will be assessed on their ability to apply what they have learned to real-life construction situations, including identifying hazards, controlling risks, and implementing safe working practices. To successfully complete the course, candidates must achieve the required pass mark and actively participate throughout the training.
Upon successful completion, delegates will receive a CITB SMSTS certificate, which is valid for five years.
